QR CODE GUIDE

Everything you need to create a QR code that works

A good QR code is more than a pattern of squares. The right format, contrast, size, and error correction help it scan quickly on screens, packaging, menus, business cards, and signs.

01

What is a QR code?

A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information such as a website URL, plain text, or Wi-Fi credentials. A phone camera reads the pattern and opens the encoded content.

02

Static vs. dynamic QR codes

WebToolBay creates static QR codes: the destination is stored directly in the code, so the code does not expire. A dynamic QR code redirects through a hosted service and can be edited later.

03

Privacy by default

Your content and logo are processed in your browser. WebToolBay does not upload or store the information used to generate your code.

PNG OR SVG?

Choose the right download format

Both formats contain the same QR data. Choose based on where the finished code will be used.

PNG

Best for screens

Use PNG for websites, presentations, social media, and documents at a fixed size.

  • Widely supported
  • Ready to share
  • Choose high resolution for print
SVG

Best for design and print

Use SVG when the QR code will be placed in a design file, resized, or printed on signs and packaging.

  • Scales without blur
  • Ideal for professional printing
  • Works in most design software
ERROR CORRECTION

How much recovery do you need?

Error correction lets a QR code remain readable when part of the pattern is dirty, damaged, or covered by a small center logo. Higher recovery creates a denser code.

PRINT & DESIGN

Make your QR code easy to scan

Keep strong contrast

Use dark modules on a light background. Avoid similar foreground and background colors.

Protect the quiet zone

Leave the clear border around the code untouched. Do not crop it or place text inside it.

Size for viewing distance

For close-range print, start around 25 mm (1 inch). Increase the code size as scanning distance increases.

Keep logos modest

Use high error correction and keep the center logo below roughly 20% of the total QR width.

POPULAR USES

One generator, many places to connect

🍽

Restaurant menus

Link tables, windows, and takeaway packaging to a current menu.

Business cards

Send people directly to a portfolio, profile, booking page, or contact form.

Wi-Fi access

Let guests join a network without manually typing the password.

Product packaging

Connect printed products to instructions, support, ingredients, or registration.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Why won’t my QR code scan?

Colors are too similar

Increase contrast between modules and background. Dark navy on white is usually safer than two medium-tone colors.

The code is too small

Export at a larger size and make sure individual modules remain sharp in the final design.

The quiet zone was cropped

Restore the blank margin around all four sides. Nearby text or artwork can interfere with detection.

The logo covers too much

Reduce the logo size and use High error correction. Important data modules still need to remain visible.

The printed surface is difficult

Gloss, folds, curves, texture, and poor lighting can reduce readability. Test on the real material.

The destination is unavailable

The code may scan correctly even when its website does not load. Check the encoded URL and HTTPS connection.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Good to know

Is this QR code generator free?

Yes. Create and download as many QR codes as you need without an account.

Do WebToolBay QR codes expire?

No. Static QR codes work as long as the encoded destination remains available.

Is my information uploaded?

No. Generation and image export happen directly in your browser.

Which format should I download?

Choose PNG for screens and SVG for print or designs that may be resized.

What does error correction mean?

It helps a code remain readable when part is damaged. Higher levels create denser codes.

Can I use these commercially?

Yes. Downloaded QR codes can be used in personal or commercial projects.
