Best QR Code Size for Printing

There is no single perfect printed QR size. The right dimensions depend on scanning distance, the amount of encoded data, print sharpness, surface quality, and the camera being used.

Start with the 10:1 rule

A useful starting point is to make the code width about one tenth of the expected scanning distance. A code scanned from 30 cm away therefore starts around 3 cm wide. Treat this as a baseline and validate the real output.

Account for code density

Long text, complex vCards, and tracking URLs create denser QR patterns. Denser codes need more printed detail, so enlarge them or shorten the destination URL.

Protect contrast and quiet space

Dark modules on a plain light background are the safest choice. Keep at least four empty modules around all sides; nearby text, borders, or artwork should not enter this quiet zone.

Test the final material

A file that scans on a bright display may fail on glossy paper, fabric, curved packaging, or a distant poster. Test an actual production proof in realistic light and from the intended distance.
